Lip Augmentation
Lip
Augmentation is a procedure to increase the size
of the lips. The upper or lower lip may be treated
alone or together at the same time. Lip augmentation
can be achieved by injecting collagen, surgically
implanting materials, or using the patients own
skin for a graft. Some procedures are temporary;
others are permanent.
How
the procedure is performed
Collagen is used by injecting small amounts into
the lip with tiny needle. Because the body slowly
absorbs the collagen, the results generally last
three months. The procedure may be repeated as needed.
Synthetic
implants such as Gore-Tex, SoftForm and Soft ePTFE
are a surgical option with permanent results. The
do not shrink and are not absorbed into the body
like collagen. To insert an implant, the surgeon
makes a small incision on the inside of the lip.
The material is then inserted through a small needle
and reshaped.
Local
fat grafts may be used for Lip Augmentation. This
procedure utilizes soft tissue from elsewhere on
the body to enhance the lips. The surgeon makes
an incision inside the mouth, allowing the graft
to be placed into the lip. Results from this procedure
are permanent.
Depending
on the type of procedure, the surgeon may use topical
or local anesthetics or general anesthesia. The
procedure will take from 30 minutes to two hours.
Lip augmentation is usually an outpatient procedure.
It is most often done under local anesthesia. The
technique used for your Lip Augmentation will be
decided by you and the surgeon. He will discuss
the various options with you at your consultation.
What
to expect after procedure
Some swelling and discomfort is common after surgery.
Cold compresses and pain medication may help. Antibiotics
may be prescribes to help prevent infection. Healing
after injection procedures tends to be quicker than
after grafting or flap surgeries. The length of
time that results from lip augmentation last depends
on the type of procedure used and the individual
patient's response.
Resuming
work and other activities
You should be able to return to work in one to two
days after your procedure, depending on the level
of activity required by your job. Keep in mind that
you will still have some swelling to the site.
