Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion
is a procedure to “polish” the skin
surface down to the lowest level of scarring or
acne, or to wear away facial wrinkles. It improves
the appearance of skin by re-texturing problem areas.
Following this procedure, you can expect a smoother,
more visually satisfying skin surface.
How
the surgery is performed
Dermabrasion is performed by the surgeon, using
an instrument attached to a spinning wheel. The
surgeon moves the instrument over the problem area(s),
resurfacing the top layer of skin. Dermabrasion
is performed on an outpatient basis under general
anesthesia. The procedure takes anywhere from 15
minutes to more than one hour, depending on the
severity and size of the area to be resurfaced.
What
to expect after surgery
Following Dermabrasion, you will have some swelling
and a burn-like appearance to the site(s) treated.
You will also have some oozing and redness that
will begin to resolve after one week. The redness
may last up to three months. You will need to apply
ointment daily to help minimize the amount of scabbing
you experience. Your skin will be extra sensitive
to sunshine and reflected light. Therefore, it is
very important to follow the instructions regarding
the application of sunblock.
Resuming
work and other activities
You will be able to return to work after you skin
has re-epithelialized around seven to ten days.
Keep in mind that you will still have some swelling
to the site.
