Collagen Replacement Therapy®

Collagen is a naturally occurring fibrous protein found in both humans and animals. It provides structural support for bones, skin, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels and is the most abundant protein in the body.

Zyderm® and Zyplast® are two forms of collagen implants used to replenish the skin’s collagen layer, to smooth lines and wrinkles and add definition to lip borders from the inside out. Results are immediate and can last for three to six months.

How the procedure is perfomed
Zyderm® and Zyplast® (natural products derived from highly purified bovine collagen) can be injected through a tiny needle just below the surface of the skin. The procedure takes less than 15 minutes to perform and will last several months. Just like your own collagen, your body will eventually absorb this collagen so ongoing treatments are necessary to maintain your results. If you stop your treatments, the new collagen will simply be reabsorbed and your face will gradually return to its natural contours.

What to expect after the procedure
Healing times vary individually, but many people return to work the same day. The treatment requires minimal recovery and is relatively painless. Zyderm® and Zyplast® injectable collagen contain lidocaine for greater patient comfort. Results are immediate and the product does not migrate.

Skin test
A free skin test must be performed four weeks prior to treatment to screen for a pre-existing allergy to collagen. Some patients have reported allergic reactions to bovine collagen.
